The Amputee Coalition announces to the inaugural 2024 National Athlete Advocate Ambassador Campaign, movement initiator, Gulf War Army Veteran, four-time track and field All-American, two-time Olympic trials qualifier, and long-time Amputee Coalition supporter, advocate, and current Board Member, John Register. The 2024 campaign was created to enhance the Amputee Coalition community voice through targeted messaging collaboratively shared in unison with athletes willing to utilize their social media platforms to elevate meaningful messaging focused on the limb loss and/or limb difference community.

John Register became a board member of the Amputee Coalition in January of 2018, bringing not only his personal experiences living with limb loss but also a passion for empowering the community to share their stories and enhance perception, policy, and passion. After the amputation of his left leg, he went on to become a two-time and two-sport paralympic athlete, winning the long jump in Sydney, Australia, in 2000. He has appeared on national television, counseled US Secretaries of State on Disability Foreign Policy, and has made the 2024 Real Leaders Top Keynote Speakers list as a professional public speaker and coach, earning his certified speaking professional designation in 2017 which less than 10% of speakers worldwide have.

He founded the United States Olympic Committee’s Paralympic Military Sports Program helping wounded, ill, and injured service members use sport as a tool for their rehabilitation and is Associate Director of the U.S. Paralympics. John wrote a book during the pandemic entitled, 10 Power Stories to Impact Any Leader: Journal Your Way to Leadership Success, where he challenges readers to develop stories that will lead them better through change. John is married to Alice, and the couple have two children and 10 grandchildren.

Like John Register, the 2024 inaugural group have accomplished many achievements while also taking their platforms into the world to shine light, and promote disability and inclusion education, encouragement, and messages specifically highlighting the limb loss and/or limb difference community. The 2024 social media platform messages will range in topics including disability rights and progress, workforce development and the youth development pipeline, and inclusion and equity for the collective community. Alongside John Register, the campaign featured athletes include U.S. National Amputee Soccer Team member, Jovan Booker; Firefighter, author, motivational speaker, and American Ninja Warrior, Gary Weiland; and Colombian professional BMX rider, Julian Molina.

“The Amputee Coalition is a space for voices and stories to be heard and for our community to be seen. Bringing these athletes together comes from a place of our community thriving through continued support. As the athletes dedicate their platforms to messaging that directly impacts the limb loss and/or limb difference community we are stronger. The heart of the campaign was created to continue the support to elevate the Amputee Coalition voice and although the Amputee Coalition has numerous communication avenues and points of entry that welcome the world in, we continue to bring people in to strengthen the collective voice.” – John Register, Board member, and 2024 National Athlete Advocate Ambassador
