Congratulations to Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY for successfully hosting its 2nd annual Adaptive Sports Expo, where they celebrated National Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, on April 2, 2022. Montefiore Medical Center is a valued healthcare facility partner with the Amputee Coalition.

LLLDAMThe event was well attended. It started at 8:30 AM with Achilles International regular training day, held in Central Park with 18 people, which half of them stayed for the event at 11 AM. Two of them were our patients and new to Achilles International.

From 11:00 AM to 1 PM, more than 20 new people living with disability registered (more than half were amputees) as new participants on the Montefiore Adaptive Sports List. About six of the regular patients came, and two new amputees discharged recently from the Montefiore system also participated. There were participants ranging from age 6 to the 90s!

Montefiore received great feedback from the exposing organizations: Hanger, Challenged Athlete Foundation, Achilles International, Burke Rehab Hospital, NYC Parks & Recreation. Four Certified Peer Visitors from the Amputee Coalition had an enjoyable experience and were happy to learn about what Montefiore is doing so they can help us spread the word.

Mentefiore adaptive sportsMontefiore held three different activities; the first one was Adaptive Fitness led by the Einstein Med Students, following our previous virtual classes routine. Then, Pickleball took place led by our residents, and finally, Adaptive Zumba was led by volunteer instructors Sabrina and Ugo.
