Opioid addiction is prevalent in the United States and has claimed the lives of many Americans. In response to this, the Amputee Coalition has signed on to Voices for Non-Opioid Choices’ letter in support of alternative therapies for veterans.

The letter urges the VA National Formulary (VANF) to update its coverage policy to make all clinically appropriate non-opioid therapies available to VA patients immediately. The goal of this appeal is to help prevent opioid addiction and save lives.

After an acute pain incident or surgery, many veterans are prescribed opioid-based analgesic products and ultimately become addicted to these powerful substances. Despite the risk, VA patients currently have little choice in managing their acute pain symptoms. Making sure all clinically appropriate non-opioid therapies available ensures veterans receive the best health benefits when they need it.
