Hannah Williamson

THE START OF SOMETHING NEW.

Hannah WilliamsonHey y’all! My name is Hannah and I lost my right leg above the knee almost 6 months ago. I was driving home when a distracted driver hit me head-on in my lane. I was rushed to a nearby trauma hospital where I underwent 2 emergency surgeries and was placed in an induced coma. When I woke up, the sheer gratitude I felt to be alive overwhelmed my soul.

A couple days later, I had the hardest conversation of my life. Doctors were not optimistic they could save my leg but decided they had to at least give me the option. I had to make the most selfless decision of my life. I knew as a single mom, I needed to get back to being the best mother I could be. I knew my son needed me in ways a salvaged limb could not provide. I chose to go with an amputation. Although I was losing a part of me, I was gaining so much in return.

A week later, I rolled into surgery. I am now 6 months post-op and already walking with my prosthetic. Pure resilience and determination have got me to where I am today because if you had asked me 6 months ago if I thought I would be walking, I would have cried not knowing how I would ever get to this point. Life sometimes deals you an unfortunate stack of cards. Life is constant trials and tribulations that continuously mold you into a stronger person. I am so appreciative to be alive and have so much gratitude for the medical community which has done the research to make things like prosthetics available. My temporary pain has evolved into permanent happiness!
