Daniela Hernandez

STEP BY STEP.

Hi there! I’m Daniela, a 34-year-old from Mexico, happily married with two wonderful kids. Two years ago, during a holiday in NYC, I experienced a life-changing accident. A taxi lost control and struck me while I was walking with friends on the sidewalk, resulting in the loss of my right leg above the knee and multiple fractures in my other foot.

Initially, my biggest worry was how I would continue to be a good mother and wife in the face of such adversity. However, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been able to find joy and fulfillment in my family just as much, if not more, than before. They were and always will be my biggest motivation.
Most people in Mexico can’t afford a prosthesis so In January, my friends and I founded a non-profit organization called PASOXPASO. Our mission is to help individuals without the financial means to obtain good-quality prosthetics, enabling them to regain mobility and live life to the fullest.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m reminded of a quote from someone who went through a similar experience: “If I had known how my life would turn out, I wouldn’t have cried so much.” This feeling perfectly describes my current outlook. Despite the challenges, I’m grateful for the strength and resilience that have emerged from this chapter of my life.

I am not saying it’s easy, I still get bad days but as long as the good days are more than the bad ones it’s all worth it.

I couldn’t have gone through all this without my family, friends, and a huge support system that I was lucky enough to have. They continue making my life worth living, and now, they’re helping me change other people’s lives every day.
