How ACNC24 Connections Fuel the Fight for Inclusion, Equity, and Equal Rights for Persons Who Have Disabilities
In a world that often overlooks or marginalizes people who have disabilities, the importance of community and connection has never been more vital. The Amputee Coalition’s 2024 National Conference (ACNC24) was a powerful reminder of this truth, uniting advocates, allies, and the entire Amputee Coalition (AC) community to celebrate their collective strength and shared purpose. This gathering was more than just an awareness event—it was a celebration of our unwavering commitment to creating a world where every person who has a disability can live their best life. Through the power of connections, we can challenge barriers, demand change, and advance the fight for inclusion, equity, and equal rights for all.
Held in Atlanta, Ga., a city known for its diversity and innovation, this year’s conference brought together a vibrant mix of first-time attendees, seasoned advocates, caregivers, healthcare professionals, technology innovators, and policymakers.
THE POWER OF CONNECTION: STRENGTH IN UNITY
Despite our different backgrounds and experiences, we were united by a common goal: ensuring that every person who has a disability receives the respect, access, and opportunities they deserve. Throughout the weekend, we connected, encouraged inspired one another, and strengthened our resolve. Together, we emerged not just stronger— but we are committed to creating change. ACNC24 was about more than sessions and speakers—it was about building a community. In hallways, breakout sessions, and over meals, stories were shared, struggles discussed, and successes celebrated. It became clear that individual experiences are pieces of a much larger puzzle.
“ACNC24 WAS ABOUT MORE THAN SESSIONS AND SPEAKERS – IT WAS ABOUT BUILDING A COMMUNITY.
One of the most poignant aspects of these connections was the sense of belonging that so many attendees felt, perhaps for the first time. Emily, a first-time participant, captured this sentiment perfectly: “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” she shared. “But being here, meeting so many amazing people who understand what it’s like, I feel like I’ve found a community that truly gets me.” Emily’s story is just one example of how ACNC24 brought people together, creating a support network that transcends geographical and personal boundaries.
These connections weren’t just heartwarming; they were educational. We learned from one another, shared resources, and developed strategies to tackle the challenges we face as a community.
DEMANDING INCLUSION AND EQUITY: COLLECTIVE ACTION FOR REAL CHANGE
While the connections formed at ACNC24 were deeply meaningful, the conference was also a platform for action. Central to our discussions was the urgent need for policies and practices that guarantee inclusion, equity, and equal rights for all persons who have disabilities. These principles should be the bedrock of our society, yet they are too often overlooked or inadequately addressed.
Panels and workshops provided spaces for honest, sometimes challenging, conversations about these issues. Experts and advocates shared insights on topics ranging from healthcare access to the need for adaptive technologies and the importance of representation in media and policy. These discussions underscored the reality that we must continue to demand better—for ourselves and future generations.
The So Every BODY Can Move initiative took center stage as advocates shared stories of legislative successes and outlined the steps needed to push for broader insurance coverage for recreational prosthetic and orthotic care. This intiative emphasizes that physical activity is not a privilege but a right that should be accessible to all.
One particularly impactful session focused on the disparities in healthcare coverage for prosthetics and other adaptive technologies. For too many, the cost of these essential tools remains prohibitive, limiting their ability to live independently. As panelist Nicole Ver Kuilen noted, “We shouldn’t have to fight to prove our worthiness of these basic necessities. Movement is a human right.”
The demand for policy change resonated throughout the conference. The consensus was clear: we must advance legislation that ensures equal rights and coverage for all, regardless of their disability. This isn’t just about healthcare; it’s about creating a society where every aspect of life—education, employment, and public spaces—is accessible and inclusive.
STEPPING OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE: LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE
This year’s conference theme challenged each of us to embrace new experiences and push our boundaries. Whether trying a new adaptive sport, engaging in advocacy training, or starting conversations with strangers, ACNC24 encouraged us to step beyond our limits and take bold steps toward living our best lives.
The event kicked off with engaging clinics, including dance, theater, martial arts, and yoga sessions that catered to all levels, encouraging participants to explore physical activity, creativity, and mindfulness in new and meaningful ways. Roundtable discussions on critical topics like sepsis, trauma, cancer, and diabetes provided deep insights into the unique challenges faced by the limb loss and limb difference community.
From the opening keynote to the closing celebrations, ACNC24 was a reminder that the connections we build are the bedrock of our collective strength. William Pike set the tone with his inspiring keynote on the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Pike, who lost his leg in a volcanic eruption, has turned his experience into a force for good, developing youth programs and innovating prosthetic technology. His journey is a testament to the fact that when we push ourselves and lean on each other, we can overcome anything. His message was clear: by pushing boundaries and supporting one another, we can achieve extraordinary things. Nicole Ver Kuilen captivated the audience with her story of completing a 1,500-mile triathlon to advocate for better rights and care for amputees, highlighting the power of determination and advocacy.
UNSTOPPABLE TOGETHER
The conference’s closing keynote by Blake Leeper was a fitting finale to the event. An eight-time Paralympic medalist and world record holder, Leeper’s journey is one of breaking barriers and defying expectations. Born without legs, Leeper has risen to the pinnacle of his sport, proving that the only limitations are those we place on ourselves.
In his speech, Leeper invoked the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “If you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” It was a reminder that no matter where we are on our journey, the most important thing is to keep going—and to keep lifting each other up along the way.
BUILDING CONNECTIONS FOR A BETTER FUTURE
As the conference drew to a close, the energy in the room was electric. We had connected, learned, and grown together. Now, it was time to take action. The closing remarks delivered a powerful call to action: to take what we had gained at ACNC24 and use it to drive real, lasting change.
The So Every BODY Can Move movement was front and center in this call to action. It’s more than just a slogan—it’s a rallying cry for equity, access, and inclusion. This movement is about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their ability, has the opportunity to move, participate, and thrive. It’s about breaking down barriers and building a world where every person who has a disability can live their best life.
We left the conference with a renewed sense of purpose. The fight for inclusion, equity, and equal rights isn’t just for those who attended ACNC24—it’s for everyone. But we can’t do it alone. We need more voices, more advocates, and more allies to join us in this movement.
