Winter weather can be tough on the skin. The cold air and indoor heating make the skin dry and flaky. Moving between cold and warm places can also cause skin irritation. Wearing layers and the use of prosthetic, orthotic, and other mobility devices can increase friction and pressure on the skin. Also, cold weather reduces blood flow, making the skin more sensitive and slower to heal. As the winter months begin, there are a few skin care tips are to help boost healthy skin when it is colder:
- Use thick, fragrance-free moisturizer after bathing and/or overnight.
- Bathe with lukewarm water instead of hot water to reduce drying out the skin.
- Eat a balanced diet that includes Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and Omega-3 fatty acids.
- Ensure proper fit with prosthetic, orthotic, and assistive devices to reduce unnecessary friction and pressure on the skin as the body responds to changes in different temperatures.
- Seek medical advice if experiencing any persistent or unusual changes which may include your Doctor, Prosthetist/Orthotist, Dermatologist, or other healthcare providers.
