For Immediate Release
(April 1, 2023, Washington, D.C.) April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month (LLLDAM), a time to recognize the more than 2.7 million people living with limb loss and limb difference in the United States. An estimated 187,000 people lose a limb each year in this country alone, and by 2050 the number of amputees is expected nearly to double.
“As the number of people living with limb loss and limb difference continues to grow, the Amputee Coalition will increasingly champion the needs of the community, providing support and offering resources on the latest innovations for those living with limb loss and limb difference,” Amputee Coalition President and CEO Cass Isidro said. “Throughout April, we will be recognizing and elevating the voice of the limb loss and limb difference community. Our goal is to ensure no amputee is ever alone.”
Established in 2010 by the Amputee Coalition, LLLDAM recognizes people living with limb loss and limb difference. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Inspire to Elevate.” The Amputee Coalition has a series of activities and events for the community built around four elements of that theme: Elevate Your Story, Elevate Your Voice, Elevate Your Community, and Elevate Your Potential. During the month, the Amputee Coalition will be sharing the stories and experiences of people experiencing limb loss and limb difference, advocating for their needs, educating people about the community, and providing information on how others can get involved.
