Experience the Impact of Community During Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month

Apr 18, 2023 |

As we head into the third week of Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month, this week we’d like to focus on the power of Elevating Your Community! Connect with your peers, share your experiences, and make a difference for others in the community. Whether you are a new amputee or you’ve been a part of our community for a while, you can leverage your time this April to enact lasting change through community engagement. Several of our inspirational daily dares are connected to building community, so be sure to share so we can come together and celebrate.

Community engagement at its core is about meeting people where they are throughout their limb loss/limb difference journey. Disability can have an isolating effect, but by coming together to share our stories and experiences we can find camaraderie and connection. Take your first step toward community by joining our new online platform, AC Connect. This free resource will instantly connect you with thousands of other amputees across the United States and enable you to start and participate in insightful discussions. Set up your profile and join the conversation today!

Volunteering and supporting others is another great way to build community. The Amputee Coalition’s Certified Peer Visitor (CPV) program helps to connect new community members to those with similar experiences. This peer-to-peer support is helpful for those pre-op, post-op, or just looking to connect. Join our growing network of CPVs by attending a training online or near you. If you would like to meet with one of our peer visitors, you can find our request form online.

If you are looking to connect with others in a group setting, the Coalition offers virtual support groups every week. If you prefer to meet in person with a local group, the Coalition maintains a list of affiliated support groups nationwide. It has never been easier to link up with your peers! Topics range from lifestyle to rehabilitation to adaptive sports and beyond. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming meeting and getting to know you personally.

A sense of community can also be about feeling seen and understood. Because of this, Coalition resources and booklets provide many with a sense of understanding. Our Hospital Partnership program provides medical and rehabilitation facilities with free AC resources to distribute to people in need. If you know of a hospital near you, reach out and share our program with them.

Elevating the community is about using your voice, promoting advocacy, and getting involved. It is our great pleasure to be a part of this community, and we hope to continue growing it with your help!
